For this weeks poll: Peeps are not food, it sugar and they are the nastiest tasting things. Brandy

Marsh mallows aren't they? I would have to say food.. Fue

Peeps are food.  I know that Krista disagrees.  I ate them in our office just to huzz her out!  laurie

Peeps - there are people who love the little nasty NON-FOOD treats.  I'm one of those OTHER people, an apple or orange will do me right, hehehe.  Thea

As for the peeps, I am definitely going to have to say food.  While unappealing in texture and appearance, they are
composed of a carbon source (glucose), and can be metabolized to yield energy for cellular processes.  That
sounds like food to me.  If your point is that even though they are technically food, they should not be
used as such, I would refer you to a book called Fast Food Nation; my point being that most of what many
people (including myself) consume is disturbing.

As for this weeks poll………. FOOD:  1) “A substance, of plant or animal origin taken in and assimilated by an organism to maintain life and growth”  Peeps are a marshmallow confection, intended as a kids' Easter candy. The manufacturer states that Peeps are the most popular non-chocolate Easter candy.  Peeps are not Kosher for Passover.  Marshmallow candy dates back to ancient Egypt where it was a honey-based candy flavored and thickened with the sap of the root of the Marsh-Mallow plant (althea officinalis). Marsh-Mallow grows in salt marshes and on banks near large bodies of water. It is common in the eastern United States. Until the mid 1800's, marshmallow candy was made using the sap of the Marsh-Mallow plant. Gelatin replaces the sap in the modern recipes.  Not to gross anyone out but gelatin is made from the boiled bones, skins and tendons of animals.Peeps certainly meet the first part of the definition of food, but I doubt that you could sustain life by just eating Peeps.  In short, I am undecided.

As a side note:  In Sacramento there is an annual contest for eating peeps. This last year (2002), Jason (Peepicide) won the prize, consuming 72 peeps in 1/2 hour.  Makes me sick just thinking about it Isn’t unemployment grand?-Ian

As far as the peeps go- SO NOT FOOD!!!!!!!!!!  No nutritional value.  They are so gross.  I don’t think anything that apparently tastes better after it has become stale and crusty is good for you.  (I have heard that many people enjoy these freaky treats after the package has been left open for a couple of days.)  so gross, and so not food.  Krista

They are not food! I don't like them at all. (And I  like almost everything) I know that there are people like my husband that love them and would call them food.  I just don't get it.  Hasmik

My personal view is that Peeps are food—no question about it.  I have consumed several in the last two weeks and if it can be consumed, it is food in my book.  Is a peep necessarily healthy?  Depends on which book of nutrition you subscribe to.  Atkins? No…Low Fat? Yes…  Organic?  No… Then comes another popular nutritional question: Is sugar bad for you?  Many will argue, but I do not believe that sugar is bad for you.  People make sugar out to be the enemy, when really it’s what keeps us alive.  Like the sun, eh?  Would I eat 72 peeps in ½ hour?  No…would I eat a few in a day, yes…  Are peeps better after they have become stale and crusty?  Absolutely…does that make it not food?  No.  I wonder if those who consider peeps “not food” would also consider marshmallows “not food”…  A peep is nothing more than a sugar-coated marshmallow…Are S’mores food?  What I think is most interesting about this poll is that those who said “not food” relied on their subjective beliefs on what food is and/or is not, while those who said “food” looked for some objective standard from which to judge….this said, polls are about opinions and preferences and I stand by standing by each person’s right to judge a poll based on his or her own criteria, unless otherwise stated.  Food.  Josh

Verdict? TIED!!
